Summary/Abstract: In the longitudinal study we focus on the pragmatic communicative functions of the usage of personal pronouns I and you in the caregivers’ speech of the child aged from 6 to 36 months. Our material consists of 30 hours’ recordings of the speech of both parents and both grandmothers directed to the same child. We found out, that the same communicative functions are dominant in the speech of all recorded adults. They are informative communicative functions while using personal pronoun I, such as commenting on one’s intention, attitude and activity and positive operative communicative functions while using personal pronoun you mostly expressing a combination of two functions: commenting on the child’s activities, state, abilities, intentions or feelings with the question related to the child or with the praise of the child. Moreover, in child directed speech there is a specific communicative function, talking for others in the role play, which helps the child to learn about pronouns’ usage in the shifting reference in the dialogue.
