Text above Culture: A History of Literary Translation from Persian into Bosnian

Summary/Abstract: Several masterpieces of classical Persian literature were read, interpreted, and studied in Bosnia ever since the XV century. On the other hand, the translation activity from Persian into Bosnian began only in the second half of the XIX century. The authors of this paper sought to divide the history of those translation activities into three chronological periods: 1 Beginnings to 1950; 2. From 1950. to 1990; 3. From 1990. until today. For each period a brief overview is provided, followed by the description of its main features and characteristics. In conclusion, the authors noted that translation activities as it progressed came to encompass literary works from contemporary Persian literature, as well as some classical works that were not prominent in the Ottoman period. Classical literary texts in Persian that were part of the cultural context of Ottoman Bosnia are much more represented in literary renditions into Bosnian than contemporary works. Thus, the tradition of literary translations is more about the reception of classical Persian texts than about the reception of the culture of their origin.
