Summary/Abstract: In order for hospital infrastructure to be better geared to the needs of its patients, it is necessary to optimize patient logistics. The study analyzed the experience with three innovative redesign projects implemented in three Italian hospitals. The three hospitals have reorganized logistics for patient flow around patient care needs, using substitution, expected length of stay, and level of medical care. To do this, the three hospitals in Italy have significantly revised their logistical configuration, changing: (1) the organization of wards, (2) the physical layout of the hospital, (3) the capacity planning system, and (4) the organizational roles supporting flow management patients. The current paper describes the changes made and the results achieved and draw some common lessons that provide useful advice to other hospitals involved in such redesign projects. The results achieved in the three investigated cases represent an interesting material for further discussion on clinical, operational and economic issues.
