Summary/Abstract: In the present article there are examined the words borrowed from the French language (mainly in the 19th century) which in the Russian language are characterized by the theme ended in a vowel. These words whose structure is not typical for the Rus sian language occurred in the major part as the nouns of the neuter gender and belong to so called undeclinable nouns, i.e. they were adapted by the Russian morphological system in a specific way. On the other hand, the analogical French borrowings which enter the Serbo-Croatian language, in which like in Russian — there are no native words with the theme .which would have a vowel (and this is the form of French borrowings also in the Serbo-Croatian language) were fully adapted to the Serbo-Croatian morphological system: they are in masculine gender and are declined as the native nouns belonging to the first declension. Morphological adaptation of the French borrowings investigated led to the appearance, in the Serbo-Croatian language, of the forms in which there are acting other principles of distribution, characteristic of the sub-system, created by the borrowings, among other things from the French language, e.g. hiatus on the limit of the theme and the ending in the oblique case, and the like.
