Summary/Abstract: The phonetic and phonological adaptation of borrowings is the first stage of their assimilation in the language that borrows. The words borrowed from French undergo certain changes before they become part of Russian vocabulary. The chief reason for this process seems to be the existance of numerous differences between the phonological systems of the two languages. The author of the article makes an attempt to compare the two system s in respect to: qualitative and quantitative differences between the vocalic and consanantal systems of the languages, differences in syllable-structure and the differences in word structure.
