THE ACCENTUATION OF FRENCH BORROWINGS IN THE MODERN LITERARY RUSSIAN

Summary/Abstract: The present article deals with French borrowings in the modern literary Russian. Since the accent in Russian is not permanently connected with any of the syllables in the word, the accent of the words borrowed from the French language could in most cases be retained on the last syllable of a theme. There is, however, a group of words in which the accent underwent a shift. This happened due to the process of assimilation in which the borrowings were influenced by the Russian language.
