THE TRANSLATION OF IDIOMS (BASED ON THE POLISH TRANSLATION OF L. N. TOLSTOY’S ANNA KARENINA)

Summary/Abstract: Some problems of translation of idiomatic expressions were discussed in the present article. The discussion was based on the translation of L. N. Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina into Polish. The translation of idiomatic expressions presents numerous diffculties. This is due to the fact that most idioms contain considerable emotional load, sometimes are characteristic of those who use them. On the basis of the material taken from the original novel in Russian and its translation into Polish several ways of translation have been found. These were used by the translator and such ways can be enumerated: the idiom has its equivalent in Polish, the suitable but not exact equivalent in Polish is used, loose translation or translation which is descriptive are used. There are four aspects of idioms as far as their comparative plane is concerned: a. the idiomatic expression is equal to the one in another language, b. the idiomatic ex­pression and a phrase which is not an idiom, c. the idiomatic expression and one word, d. the idiom and its two equivalents in another language: idiomatic expression and words that are loosely structured. Particular attention should be paid to the last aspect; the idiomatic expressions in both languages are not equivalents as far as stylistic classifica­tion is concerned. It is possible to retain the stylistic norm through the rendition of idioms by loose translation of its meaning.
