Summary/Abstract: The Author of the article tries to analyse the genre structure of ‘Three Colours ofTime’ (1931) and ‘Condemnation of Paganini’ (1936). Contrary to the accepted opinionthe author thinks that these two novels have the genre structure of a biographical novel. His conclusion is founded on a modern theory of literature and biographical fiction. The real fates of historical figures (French writer Stendhal and Italian violinist Paganini) lie in the basis of the genealogical structure of those novels. It should be noted that the factual material of the novels is concentrated around the biographies of the main characters which at the same time is the com positional and topical dominance of the reality described by the writer. The specificity of Vinogradov’s biographical novels is defined by the documentary base of the novels which excludes the possibility of introducing fiction into the interpretation of historical material, by one plot with the elements of detectivity, by original unconnected episodes reminding one of film stills, and also by wide usage of fiction in the treatment of the biographical lives of the main characters. All these lead to the transformation of the documentary material, to the original construction of the acts of thinking of the characters, some invented episodes and events, invented monologues and dialogues.
