Summary/Abstract: The present article is an attempt at an analysis of the work of Ilija Erenburg entitled The Fall of Paris (1942) as a political and panoramic novel. According to the author the genre specificity of the analysed work is determined by: 1) ideological and subject con tent of the novel, revealing the sociopolitical and moral-psychological reasons of the decline of the Third Republic; 2) an attempt at revealing of the complex relations among the individual, society and history, taking place in the social and class, group and political, and environmental and progessional structure of the pre-war France; 3) the selection, appropriate grouping and the manner of presentation of real and fictitious heroes of the work; 4) composition and fiction construction of the novel; 5) the selection of the narrator and the construction of narration; 6) ways of constructing epic time. The above elements of ideological and artistic structure of The Fall of Paris, being the result of “intellectual-diagnostic” character of thinking of the writer and the “panoramic” way of seeing the world, reveal his creative quests in the genre of the modern Soviet novel of the 40’s and the 50’s.
