Summary/Abstract: The present article is an attempt at an analysis of I. Erenburg’s novels of the end of the 40’s and the beginning of the 50’s. According to the author, The Storm (1947) and The Ninth Wave (1952) represent a characteristic, for the Soviet prose of the first decade after the war, type of monumental panoramic-epic novel attempting at a synthesis of historical and contemporary events which played a crucial role in the socio-historical development of the contemporary world. The genre specificity of the analysed novels by I. Erenburg are determined by: ideological and thematic content of the works, the choice and manner of realization of the main conflicts of the presented epoch, an attempt at broad generalizations of the historical-political, moral-psychological and philosophical character, the wide scope of epic space, the choice and manner of presentation of heroes, composition and plot structure of the novel, the choice of the narrator and manner of conducting narration and stylistic attire of the works. On should notice that the above elements of ideological and aesthetic structure of The Storm and The Ninth Wave of I. Erenburg are at the same time the evidence of both the achievements and the indubitable artistic shortcomings of the author and the stormily and eventfully developing in the years 1945 - 1952 genre of Soviet panoramic-epic novel.
