THE STRUCTURE OF TIME AND SPACE IN DOSTOIEVSKY’S SHORT STORY KROTKAIA (THE MILD): THE POETICS OF SHORT-STORY CHRONOTOPOS

Summary/Abstract: The author of the article, taking into consideration the role of chronotopos in the poetics of the work, analyses the structure of time and artistic space of The Mild, she specifies thanks to this analysis the ethic-philosophical problems of the work, evolution of heroes and the genre of “fantastic story” of Dostoievsky. The short-story character of chronotopos is manifested in the structure of artistic time of The Mild based on the mutual and complex juxtaposition of two levels: fiction time (several hours in the course of which the hero “gathers his thoughts”) and the time of action (the time of the course of events contained in the memories of the hero). “Standstills” in the fiction time are the evidence of inclusion of the real objective time, independent of the subjective course of thoughts of the hero and that is why they allow to define the open time of the short story. The time of action of The Mild is a perceptive time of the stream of consciousness in which the notions of “the past” , “the present” , “the future” contain the ethic-psychological content, and the juxtaposition of these notions explains the tragedy of alienation of the hero from “the underground” and his dissimilarity in comparison with the hero of “Notes from the underground” . The tragedy and the mutiny of the heroine, realized in the poetics of the catastrophic short story narrowing of its space to the situation as a deadlock (“In front of the wall” ) and eradication of her closed world for the price of her own life. The analysis of rhythmic organization of time and space confirms the genre, that is short story character of The Mild.
