The Aspects of Ideology in Translation of Science Fiction Literature in the 1960s and 1970s

Summary/Abstract: The end of the 50s and the beginning of the 60s of the 20th century represents, in the Czechoslovakia, onset of the ideology of socialism into the political and social life. Marxist-Leninist philosophy becomes dominant and through the passage of time also the only worldview. Such a Marxist-Leninist orientation is beginning to be observed in the literature (choice of themes, shaping of characters, creative method, etc…). Very significant aspects of socialist ideology are present mainly in translation of science fiction works. Hegemony of Marxist-Leninist philosophy is a consequence of the fact that most science fiction works of this period were translated into English from Russian, or from other languages of the socialist countries. Science fiction reflected the future of mankind which achieved worldwide communism. Thus futuristic novels become promoters of the ideological concepts. Phantasy novels allowed the author to create a model of the alternative future of capitalism and socialism, in which capitalism would lead to the demise of civilization and socialism to its heyday. In the paper I try to point out the specific aspects of the socialist ideology that are occurring in translation of science fiction texts from the 1960s.
