Summary/Abstract: Around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, there was a movement that challenged traditional education organized by classes and lessons, with theoretical, formal, and rigid content. Besides it was seen as too rigid as children had no possibility of choosing anything and thus becoming uninterested. Instead of traditional education new orientations in education were suggested, which promoted active and natural methods. They were called even at that time alternative pedagogies. This tendency of renewal can be found under different names around the world: The New Education (France, Switzerland, Belgium), The Progressive Education (United States of America), The Reformed Pedagogy (Germany). This trend has materialized in Romania, both in the interwar period and after 1989 the educational alternatives were introduced and legislated (1995), among those were: The Waldorf Pedagogy, The Montessori Pedagogy, The Step by Step Program, etc.
