Summary/Abstract: Succession in family businesses is defined as a transfer of ownership and power to the next generations. It is very complicated and demending process, which involves representatives of the founding generation and successors. This process should be based on long–term planning, which is gradually being implemented. The success of succession largely depends on successors’ motivation and involvement. The article shows the reasons for acquisition of family business and arguments against it. It shows also the skills that successors should have to manage business effectively. Data are based on scientific publications of succession.
