Summary/Abstract: Nurses are often perceived as an important element of the interdisciplinary team, as a professional group which has its own knowledge and experience in terms of managing patient care and is prepared to perform more specialized functions. As an example of this, on 1st January 2016 the nurses’ competences were extended so that they are allowed to dispense medicines and issue prescriptions, competences which require an extensive knowledge. The nurses and midwifes, who have an appropriate level of education and who have received an adequate training in terms of medicine prescription, are allowed to dispense medicines in two professional fields: to provide preventive, diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services independently, and to carry out doctor’s recommendations in the process of diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. The aim of the article is to discuss the issues related with knowledge-intensive services, which include healthcare, and to show its possible application by extending nurses competences to dispense medicine and issue prescription. The study is based on the latest subject literature and the current legal acts. The analysis method applied in the article is a desk research.
