Summary/Abstract: Unlike the Old Kingdom, which entered the war only in 1916, people fromTransylvania, Bessarabia and Bukovina had supported the burden of the front sincethe beginning of the conflict. Whether we are talking about the internal or the externalfront, the years of the First World War were marked by great danger and restrictions, aswell as refuge, restlessness and pain and, last but not least, great losses. The civil societywas the most affected, losing human and material values which cannot be quantifiedand the war changed the attitudes and the behaviour of this society, crushing its idealsand dreams.Like the people from Ardeal, the people from Bukovina experienced, during theGreat War, the tragedy of the Romanian whose conscience was torn between the oathof loyalty to the Austrian emperor and the belonging to a nation against which he wasforced to fight. The paper presents the story of an individual drama, with a symbolicvalue for the national tragedy, to which it became a victim of, namely Bukovina.24
