The occurrence of domestic violence on the jurisdictional territory of Police headquarters of Działdow

Summary/Abstract: The following publication is an attempt at assessing domestic violence in the Działdowo district. A detailed analysis has been undertaken regarding domestic intervention as well as domestic intervention characterized by acts of violence and the genders of both the victims and perpetrators. The research results lead to the conclusion that most victims of domestic violence are women and minors under the age of 13, whereas men constitute a small minority. Among the perpetrators, there are more men who commit acts of violence compared to women. Alcohol abuse is considered to be the main cause of domestic violence, since under its influence the perpetrators are more likely to use violence towards their family members. The victims of domestic violence mainly seek help for themselves as well as for the perpetrators in local self-government institutions (communal committees for the prevention of alcohol-related problems) in order to prevent further occurrences of abuse and violence. It is only later that they turn to social welfare centres in an attempt to improve their financial situation.
