Summary/Abstract: Ilona Copik’s monograph „Topografie i krajobrazy. Filmowy Śląsk” [“Topographies and Landscapes. Silesia in Film”] (2017) offers the reader a comprehensive approach to the issue of “Silesia on film” in the perspective of the region’s cultural geography. For the object of consideration, the author chooses “topographic” films, i.e. films in which the place depicted on the screen is the resultant of conscious creative activities and evokes a specific strategy regarding space in various contexts. Copik’s book presents a satisfying, comprehensive, original and inspiring, and often cognitively sophisticated, film image of Silesia. By showing the liveliness of film practices related to Upper Silesian film representations, she demonstrates with all her power that dealing with Silesian cinema means touching sensitive cultural issues, just as the combination of methods and research tools used in the work fortunately serves the recognition of film topography and landscapes.
