Summary/Abstract: After countless floods mentioned by documents in the last two centuries, between 1880 and 1886 there was the rectification of the Dâmbovița course on its section that crossed the city. After the completion of the entire urban operation, Dâmbovița gained a new destiny in the existence of Bucharest, enrolling in the efforts to modernize the entire urban structure. From an unmanageable river, Dâmbovița became one of the modern public spaces of the city (next to the boulevards); through its various, complex, adjacent functions, it contributed to the process of urbanization of its new route and neighbouring territories, some of the buildings and developments becoming the landmarks of the city; finally, through the new bridges Dâmbovița joined the new city traffic network. The evolution of the area of the current Union Square is eloquent by the successive transformations related to the rectification of the Dâmbovița route: from a permanently endangered area of floods, it has become an important traffic junction and one of Bucharest's most important commercial points.
