Sharing economy: key regulatory challenges

Summary/Abstract: The paper looks at the selected issues raised by the emergence of companies that operate in the sharing economy, i.e. a model of economic activity involving transactions facilitated by community-based online services. Particular attention is given to Uber and Airbnb, two major companies which represent that business model. The author identifies main legal challanges related to sharing economy (circumventing labor law, competition rules, consumer protection) as well as presents regulatory proposals and actions taken by the European Commission, governments and local authorities.
