Summary/Abstract: What lies at the centre of this research is the metaphorical and/or metonymic meaning generation in certain Bulgarian sayings. The part-of-speech meaning of the semantic centre of the material analyzed is of pivotal interest as my assumption is that it is the morphological properties of the key words that contribute most to the metaphoric VS. metonymic character of sayings. My claim is that source domains of preeminently nominal nature produce metonyms whilst source domains that are predominantly verbal and/or adjectival in content have metaphorical rather than metonymic meaning extensions. In what follows this hands-on and to a certain extent intuitive observation is put to the test through a comparison of the semantic relations in the source and target domains. On this basis conclusions are made on the contribution of morphology and semantics to the generation of meaning in secondary nomination.
