Summary/Abstract: The objective of this paper is to examine a specific type of proper nouns, namely nicknames of Polish and Italian contemporary gangsters. This research, which is situated in the framework of anthroponymy (a branch of onomastics), aims at presenting, after a brief terminological overview, an analysis of criminal nicknames in a semantic and pragmatic perspective. Their motivations and the semantic fields they refer to are investigated in order to identify the main anthroponymic tendencies and study the relationship between the form and connotation of a nickname and its function as an element of a criminal slang.
