New face of a gossip – a gossip on the Internet

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is a gossip as a genre of text discussed in the specific context of Internet communication. I wish to present the manner in which new technological possibilities influence the process of linguistic communication and its individual components: the sender–recipient relation, time, place, channel. With the assumption that it is pragmatic, extralinguistic factors that determine a text to a large extent and their description needs to precede the analysis of linguistic means, I present the communication background of a gossip with particular attention given to the channel of communication, that is the Internet. The medium has a significant impact on the change of the genre model of a gossip. Undoubtedly, a gossip placed in an Internet gossip service differs substantially from a traditional gossip communicated through the grapevine and recognising the differences which result from the use of the Internet as a communication channel is the purpose of this text.
