Summary/Abstract: Devised and modified concepts of regional development are the subject of constant evolution. Its course, however, is not linear. As a result, there is no one, integral, homogenous and universal recipe for the initiation and reinforcement of developmental processes in the region. Entities that shape the processes may choose different trajectories of positive transformations. Currently the problem seems to favour the theories that focus around the elements of economy which are based on knowledge and endogenous development. Within them, broadly understood innovation plays an important role. In this context, each mechanism of regional development can be materialised in a given space (region). Its specificity and the need to create and implement innovation must be taken into consideration. Such claims are facilitated by forming an innovative environment, especially a regional system of innovation.
