Summary/Abstract: This article presents an account of the development of the discipline of Political Science at the Jagiellonian University which goes back to 1801 when the academic field, then called “the encyclopedia of political abilities”, first appeared at the university in Krakow. Of crucial importance in the process of this development is the contribution of professor Michał Rostworowski who in 1911 founded the School of Political Science at the Jagiellonian University. It was the first such school in Poland. Rostworowski was its professor, the author of its modernized programme in the years 1920-1949, and the pioneer of courses on contemporary political systems, the subject which is taught until today at both the Institute of Political Science and International Relations and at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University.
