Summary/Abstract: Instead of presenting the classic dichotomy of „us” and „the other” one of the main characteristics of the anthropological film is its subjective, confession-like style, the fact that it is able to dissolve the contradiction between the rigid, preconceptional, impersonal knowledge and the personal experience. The joint presence of interpretative and sensual elements, of documentary style and reflexivity is exceptional in the history of Hungarian, etnographical / anthropolgical film, especially concerning the theme of gypsies as a subject of the film. However the films presented in this study (Sára Sándor−Tari János: Mozgóképek cigányokról, 1961; Pölcz Boglárka−Pölcz Róbert: Szafari, 2001) can be discussed from this point of view despite of the historical, cultural differences between them, and those concerning time and space.
