Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is a comparative analysis of the state and dynamics of development of 49 Polish cities – former and present provincial capitals – leading to the identification of their diversity and changes in their economic condition, demographic situation and infrastructural investment. In the research procedure, the taxonomic measure of development was applied, which makes it possible to conduct a multidimensional comparative analysis on the basis of synthetic variables. The research results show that former provincial capitals are much less developed than the cities that preserved the status of the capital after the local and regional government reform of 1999.
