Summary/Abstract: This review paper comprises main theoretical concepts related to the problem of foreign language learning motivation and analyses the attitudes and conclusions about the importance of motivation in the process of learning foreign languages. The role of motivation for successful and quality foreign language learning is one of the key themes of foreign language teaching methods. Previous research has demonstrated the existence of more types of motivation with the emphasis of the role of English language teachers as being significant in supporting and empowering the intrinsic motivation that all students possess in a certain degree. Teachers can destroy the inborn motivation and willingness to learn English as well as transfer their enthusiasm in an almost miraculous way. Exclusively extrinsic motivation does not imply the will and the tendency to learn English and is certainly a better combination of the mentioned functional motivation with a positive affective environment, which is, primarily, the responsibility of the English language teacher.
