Summary/Abstract: The paper describes the issue of defining of qualitative sociology. It is usually associated with the use of the of qualitative methods of research and data analysis. If we, as sociologists use qualitative research methods (eg. participant observation, undstandardized interview, photography as a research method), we are widely seen as qualitative sociologists. However, this issue seems to be more complex. Qualitative methods can in fact be used together with quantitative methods, which – following the principle cited above – rule out the possibility of defining such research as a qualitative sociological research. The opposition quality vs. quantity generates a symbolic space of delineation of the border of qualitative sociology. Nevertheless, the indicated dichotomy is somewhat blurred. Our thinking has qualitative character (for example in classyfing objects of perception). Thus, the qualitative thinking also seems to be an important part of the sociological outlook, and consequently – the analyzes that we make.
