Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this article is to show the disease as a factor limiting the potential of human capital in the economy. The study used indicator of lost years of healthy life due to premature mortality and disability caused by chronic diseases in the age group 15-69 years.The results of the research have provided an assessment of the intensity of the examined phenomenon in Poland against EU member states. Attempted to determine the specifics of this phenomenon in respect of the "old" and "new" EU. The study used data from the databases of the World Health Organization (WHO). The data refer to the period 2000-2012.The empirical part has been preceded by a review of theoretical concepts to describe the mechanisms of interactions between the level of economic growth of the national economies and the health of society.
