Summary/Abstract: The Transylvanian Roman Catholic diocesan clergy’s revolutionary conduct outlined in the light of reprisals. After the 1848 revolution, where even Catholic priests took part, reprisals followed. The bishop tried to protect the priests by diff erent kinds of protective mechanisms. One of the most effective steps was the one to punish the revolutionary priests within the church, thus saving them from the state reprisal. The article analyzes the engagement of the priests with the revolution and the revolutionary role of the priests. Another interesting aspect of the problem is the behaviour of some priests toward the Austrian authorities.
