On developing autonomy in the context of bilingual education

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the concept of autonomy in the context of bilingual language teaching. First, the notion of autonomy in education is presented. Next, plurilingual competence is defined and an attempt is made to outline the principles of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), which might be an excellent opportunity to develop learner autonomy. The last part of the paper is devoted to the discussion of the results of a questionnaire administered to third-graders in a bilingual middle school with French classes. The purpose of the questionnaire was to determine the level of autonomy of students who are about to finish their education in bilingual classes.
