First secretaries of PUWP in Opole in the years 1950-1990

Summary/Abstract: The Provincial Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party in Opole that functioned in the years 1950-1990, fulfilled an important political role and thus affected almost all spheres of social and economic life of the Opole voivodeship in the aforementioned period. The article presents the personage of eight activists that fulfilled the function of first secretaries of PUWP in Opole. The most important part of the text is a characteristic of the stage of performing party functions in Opole on the background of individual careers. The article is summarized with an analysis on territorial and social origin, as well as age and education. The archival base primarily consists of records of the Provincial Committee of PUWP in Opole, which are kept in the State Archive in Opole, as well as press releases, especially „Trybuna Opolska” (a press organ of the Provincial Committee), memories and diaries.
