Summary/Abstract: Attempts to “drive out” the devil from the Bible and from theology are by no means a new phenomenon; they intensified after the Second Vatican Council. However, that used to proceed openly, in the form of an academic dispute (R. Bultmann, H. Haag and others). Nowadays, tendencies to eliminate demonology are much more dangerous because they are disguised. They take the form of spiritual or scientific “biblical” commentaries for the general public, with contents allegedly confirmed by their authors’ highest scholarly, therapeutic and ascetic competence. When preparing homilies, preachers often use “aids” of this kind. Yet, they should be sensitive to contents that are false and incompatible with the teaching of the Church so as not to become false prophets in the service of the devil and his angels.
