Summary/Abstract: The belief in the real presence of evil spirits can be found not only in biblical texts but also in the apocrypha, which draw inspiration from them. In the New Testament, particularly in the Gospels and the Revelation, their presence is all too conspicuous. The situation is similar in the case of apocryphal gospels. Admittedly, their content goes far beyond biblical accounts, but, in this way, they stress how important the awareness of the presence and the destructive effect of personal Evil was in very young Christian communities, scattered all over the world. The biblical moderation in matters of demonology as well as the excess of apocryphal writings in these matters determine the directions of work in contemporary theology. On the one hand, it should not “demonize” reality; on the other, it must not deprive the Church of the awareness of the existence and the destructive activity of Satan and his angels in everyday human life.
