Summary/Abstract: In the scope of the TEMPUS project UM_JEP_40043_2006 Support Network for Improvement of the Strategic Planning (SuNSiP), self-evaluation and external evaluation of agricultural academic institutions in the region has been conducted. Lack of strategic planning was outlined as a point which is in common for all the institutions evaluated. This weakness is recognized as a root for all other institutional weaknesses, which decreases institutional capability to use opportunities „offered by external environment“. In other words, lack of strategic planning decreases an institution’s capacity of becoming one of the leading in the field. In that sense, in order to mitigate this weakness, it is necessary to upgrade institutional capacity in order to create and lead integral and complex strategic planning cycle. Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences started set of activities following that direction. The initial experience will be presented here. The objective of this paper is to underline complexity of strategic planning integral cycle, then to outline phases and activities that are fundamental for planning success and to explain the position and importance of strategic planning for quality assurance process. The first faculty experience suggests that it is extremely important to make strategic plan not as a „picture painted by one person or small group“. It is important to involve all stakeholders and to develop understanding that plan is an „expression of their own wishes and objectives/values“ and that plan execution will bring clear benefits to their own prosperity and success.
