Summary/Abstract: The social, political and economic context represented for the Romanian writers under the communist regime both a source of inspiration and a constraint. There was a certain moment in which the authorities accepted and even recommended the depiction of the Romanian society in the first decade of communism, but, at the same time, they continued to exercise their censorship over literature to ensure that the communist system as a whole was not criticised somehow by these new and inquisitive writers. This article is a case study of how the historical context influenced the Romanian writers’ view of a crucial moment for the social life of the Romanians: the politically imposed disappearance of the rural landowners and the introduction of the so-called “collective farms”.
