Summary/Abstract: The literary critics and historians classify the early 20th century Romanian writers as traditionalists and the modernists, taking into consideration the rural or urban source of inspiration of the writers. However, there is an important difference between the attitude of the traditionalist writers who published in the reviews Sămănătorul and Viaţa româneasca and the traditional village reflected in the works of the writers from Gândirea. Lucian Blaga, one of the most important writers from the latter group brought in the Romanian literature a different perspective on the village: it is a concept, an ideal traditional space where the human being can communicate with the transcendent and the creator of the Romanian style and of the “minor culture”, from which a major culture can derive.
