Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development is a concept of social development that has now become in many countries the basis for creation of policies, strategies and development programmes. At national level, the government has a number of instruments to act on the decisions of individual business entities. These instruments are the tools of economic policy and should be used to create the conditions for the implementation of the concept of sustainable development. General government expenditure may be in this respect, one of the important types of tools to implement this idea in modern economies. The aim of the paper is a comparative analysis of the structure of general government expenditure in Poland and in selected economies for the period 2002-2011 for the implementation of their relationship with the concept of sustainable development.
