Summary/Abstract: The recent financial crisis and accompanying economic slowdown has led to a significant deterioration of public finances and fiscal instability in many countries. However, the main reason for this situation was not the financial crisis, but earlier than it government irresponsibility, which manifested in many countries by the use of fiscal policy for any purpose other than to stabilize the economy. The purpose of this paper is to show that in modern economies, fiscal sustainability is not considered by politicians as their duty, but has become a coercion, formally imposed by various regulations, which were placed on the levels of the international groups and nations. To describe this problem examples of regulations in the European Union were presented.
