Summary/Abstract: Papers published in the past decades on the subject of irreversible effects of widely understood globalisation and the internationalisation of activities, revealed the true face of civilisation development and progressive consumerism and their impact on a future situation in rural areas. Therefore, on the one hand, there is a moral obligation of the EU member states to promote sustainable development on the world scale, and on the other – their deep conviction about the necessity of moving away from overly intensive, specialised and highly concentrated agriculture. The aim of this publication is to present the evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy and to indicate the role which the idea of sustainable development plays in it, in the context of global challenges. It appears that actions taken by the Community in the field of agriculture and rural areas have their important contribution to the promotion of sustainable development in this domain in the international scale.
