Summary/Abstract: Category of gender is analyzed in the article. The author presents the terminology designating category of gender and criteria for distinguishing genders in Polish and Ukrainian scientific literature, including university grammars of both languages, as well as the peculiarities in realization of this category in Polish and Ukrainian. The article is a short review of debatable issues concerning category of gender. Attention is paid to the issues that a Ukrainian student can encounter comparing theoretical issues in Polish and Ukrainian linguistics. The author studied the peculiarities in realization of category of gender in the Polish language, compared with Ukrainian, that impinge on making the most common language errors in the Polish language of people whose first language is Ukrainian. The types of errors are shown. The study shows that some of them are permanent and difficult to eradicate due to their deeper cognitive basis – different categorization of the world through grammatical means of the category of gender in Polish and Ukrainian.
