Karol Dejna’s Silesian dialect researches

Summary/Abstract: Prof. Karol Dejna began his postwar research from examination of the Polish-Czech borderland in Silesia. The dupble focus of the scrutiny was Lach dialects and Silesian dialects of southern Racibórz County. The monumental work, entitled Polsko-laskie pogranicze językowe na terenie Polski consists of two parts: an atlas containing 364 maps presenting phonological, morphological, and lexical diversity of the area; and monographic description of the dialects. Methodological foundations and contents of the work, have been characterised in the article. The socio-political and academical backgrounds have been discussed, and the stances of Polish and Czech researchers, concerning the interpretation of the dialects as transitional ones between Polish and Czech languages have been discussed as well. In the conclusion, Karol Dejna, stated that te boundary between Polish and Czech languages lies if not on the whole area of Lach dialect, then at least a zone of the strong transitional north-eastern Lach dialects. In this article the other Karol Dejna’s works concerning Silesian issues, particularly in the onomastics field have also been discussed.
