Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the problem of one-party-states in Africa and their typologies on the basis of contemporary analysis of the political developments in African countries after they gained independence. From the aspect of general theories of totalitarian and authoritarian systems (C. Friedrich, Z. Brzezinski, H. Chehabi, J. Linz, W Merkel, etc.) and specific theories of the developing (and African) countries (E. Shills, R. C. Tucker, D. Apter, S. Huntington, P. Brooker, M. Bratton, N. van de Walle, N. Chazan, etc.) the author analyses and assesses principal typologies and their criteria from the point of view of the development of African non-democratic regimes. The detailed analysis brings him to the conclusion that present-day general theories of one-party-states are too general in character and can be applied to African countries to a limited degree only. Using the criteria of the competition, the bearer of political power, the ideology, and partly the participation and mobilization, the author develops his own scheme of typology of African one-party-states, which in his view should include the following three level categories. First level: no-competitive one-party-states, semi-competitive one-party states and competitive one-party-states; second level: authoritarian party states, authoritarian military-bureaucratic states and non-authoritarian party states; third level: revolutionary Afro-Marxist and Afro-socialist states, conservative and reform-modernization national states.
