Theoretical and Methodological Problems of Theory of Democratization

Summary/Abstract: Study deals with the theoretical problems of the democratization process. It starts with the analysis and critique of the Huntington’s theory of democratization aves which the author tests on the development of different regions – Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. He proposes his own theory of the synchronized democratization waves, in which democracy competes with some form of nondemocracy. 1 wave: democracy v. feudalism, 2 wave: democracy v. fascism, 3 wave: democracy v. communism; 4 wave: democracy v. political Islam. He concludes that the further research is necessary both to test the theory and to specify some internal characteristics of the particular waves.
