Summary/Abstract: The first musing on the nature and power of the word in the old Romanian culture (Ms.rom. 766, The Library of the Romanian Academy) belongs to Gherasimos Palladas, patriarch of Alexandria (1688-1710). The paper was able to attribute the Eulogy of the word, preserved only in a Romanian translation, to this Greek scholar, by means of establishing the connections that link the text to the Veneto-Cretan school, which marshaled the use of sources and the discursive practices of this particular author. The research revisits the intellectual career of Palladas, who crossed during his activity Crete, Venice, Constantinople, Alexandria, Iaşi and Bucharest and hence various networks of confessional and cultural mobility, being for that matter subject to religious contentions, identity conflicts and censorship. The paper argues that the Eastern Christian cultural milieu to which Gherasimos belonged was obviously less institutionalized than the contemporary European Republic of Letters, being nonetheless as vibrant and creative.
