Summary/Abstract: The article outlines different approaches to the problem of preserving strangeness in translating for children, stemming from different views on the needs, abilities and expectations of the child reader. It summarizes arguments for and against domestication of children’s books in translation, pointing to the correlation between favouring domestication or the foreignizing approach and foregrounding some of the commonly assumed functions of children’s literature. Further, it explores the issue of alien textual convention as an aspect of translation that can be separated from cultural strangeness. The problem is illustrated with the two Polish translations of The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, both of which adapt this fable to the Polish textual convention of rhymed metrical verse.
