Polemical or Provocative? On the Role of Peritext in Increasing the Visibility of Translators and Translation in Recent Polish Retransla- tions of the Classics for Young Readers

Summary/Abstract: This paper surveys some new phenomena recently witnessed in the prac-tice of retranslating widely known books from the canon of literature foryoung readers in Poland, interpreting them as possible signals of changesbeginning in the subsystem of literature for the young, which within thepolysystem theory of translation is considered to be rather conservative andattached to existing models, and also as signals of the increasing visibilityof translators, their work and the very phenomenon of translation. Thediscussion concerns cases of recent retranslations that change traditionaltitles of children’s classics, widely recognizable on the Polish publishingmarket due to numerous previous editions and/or retranslations, the in-creased visibility of the very fact of retranslation due to translators’ andeditors’ usage of peritexts, and the increased visibility of translators’ workin peritexts.
