"Slow Speed of Transcultural Change” in the Contemporary Lithuanian Emigration Literature

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses Lithuanian emigration literature written after1989 (the proliferation of this type of literature in the last five years is related to the social processes in contemporary Lithuania). It is still popular to define the emigrant consciousness as hybrid in the Western postcolonial theories. The discourse of hybridity (or epiphanic diversity) is opposed to the discourse of identity (oppressive oneness). The author of the article uses the conception of Sten Pultz Moslund which criticizes that kind of opposition and proposes the concept of different speeds of transcultural changes and different types of hybridization. According to this conception, the Lithuanian emigration literature belongs to the type of slow speed of change, or to the literature of organic hybridity. But this kind of literature is not indiscrete. The different speeds of change could be defined in the literature of organic hybridity. One could find the wide scale – from literature of very slow change (the one, where the emigrant situation is merely reflected or the speed is slowed down by the nostalgia for native land) to the literature which already neighbour to the fast speed of change, or intentional hybridity (essay of Dalia Staponkutė). The position of epistemic nomad also could be found in the Lithuanian literature (novels of Valdas Papievis). The variations of different speeds are distinguished according the different types of defamiliarization of the emigration experience.
