Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses the work of Vartolomeu Stănescu, Bishop of Râmnic-Noul Severin, a noteworthy work due to the openness it showed towards the principles of “social Christianity”. According to the author, Stănescu was the most important representative of this school of thought in Romania, who aimed at reconsidering the principles of modernity from the perspective of Christian values. The paper demonstrates that Vartolomeu Stănescu had the capacity to assimilate and “localize”, at the level of Romanian realities and of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the European ideas, any reference to them in his works implying their transformation into personal convictions.
